Eastern Promises

Why did I bother? It held so little promise. LOL.

But seriously, what a piece of crap. Who did they make this movie for? The trailers made it look like some kind of intrigue/crime/thriller but it's really a chick flick dressed up as a crime story. Bleh.
Skip it unless you need to score points with your significant female other. Watch it with her, or watch nothing at all.

A Mighty Heart

Solid effort. It is neither jingoistic nor sentimental. Somehow it feels suspenseful even when you know how it's going to end. The only part that was a little hard to swallow was Angelina Jolie as Perl's wife. Don't get me wrong; Jolie's performance was superb. She's just too sexy for this role.

I can't stop wondering why Pearl was so honest about his Jewish background when dealing with the jihadists. In one scene he is asked if he is Christian. He says no, and -voluntarily- says his family is Jewish but not religious. Something tells me that was what sealed his fate. What was he thinking?

Overall a 7.5 rating is deserved.

A footnote: Daniel Perl worked for the North Adams Transcript and the Berkshire Eagle, according to the Wikipedia page on him.

the killing of a chinese bookie

I think David Lynch must have been a Cassevettes fan.

said this about love I do know
a woman is fine; a sheep is divine
but a llama is numero uno."

Comet Holmes (not a movie)

Wow. Was it ever bright. I thought it might have been the Intnl Space Station. Huge oblong glowing object in the sky. I can only imagine how bright it looked from the middle of the Pacific or New Mexico. It was/is the brightest thing I have ever seen in the night sky aside from the moon.

"Comet Holmes is seen among the stars of the constellation Perseus in the North-Eastern sky just after midnight on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007. The comet's gas cloud continues to expand over the last 10 days after a sudden eruption and is still visible with the unaided eye." (AP Photo/Dr. Scott M. Lieberman)

Superfly

Pretty amusing. New York didn't look so glamorous back then, not that this film is shot in any part of town I would recognize. Pretty good blacksploit flick. Not as good as Shaft but worth watching.

A History of Violence

Pro: Good movie. The director had an economical style. All the dialog was carefully composed. The plot was pared down to the absolute essential elements. No excess anything in this film. Good performances from all.

Con: It's tough to believe anyone could fight so well with a fresh bullet wound to the shoulder.

I give it an eight of ten. It's a gangster movie that never once seemed formulaic.

I don't know what compelled me to watch this flick. Prolly the wicked hot blonde babe.
I didn't realize it was a chick flick. Don't waste your time.

New reason to hate the MBTA

The MBTA uses Windows XP in its fancy new ticket kiosk machines. I rode the Red Line for several months last year to work and back and never saw a kiosk being serviced. Then, a few weeks ago I was exiting the Downtown Crossing T when I noticed a technician working on one of these machines. When I looked at the video display I noticed it was loading Windows XP. I stopped to watch but left after a minute. XP seemed to be having trouble booting :)

Why did the MBTA waste our money on super expensive, buggy, insecure software like XP? This is BOSTON, a city awash with Linux expertise. The MBTA could be saving thousands of dollars each year on licensing fees alone if it had chosen a Linux or BSD distribution. And it would be saving more money on service calls because XP is about twice as reliable as Windows95 ;)

This is more proof the MBTA is run by idiots.

A Taste of Honey

advice regarding a webmaster course

I'm glad you are interested in taking a webmaster course.

Here's where I'm coming from.

I spent a lot of money on courses that were supposed to teach me how to support and implement Microsoft's stuff. It was a waste of my time and money. On countless occasions I have wished there had been someone there to shout, "NOOOOOOO! These courses are not a good value! Study something portable like Perl or shell scripting. Here, look at this Linux thing."

My fear is that your HCC webmaster courses are Microsoft centric. What's wrong with that? So many things! The WWW is based on open standards and Microsoft lives to violate and destroy open standards. My fear is that you will be taught to use MS Frontpage and learn to develop websites that only work well with Internet Explorer. This would be a disaster for you since Firefox et al are taking over. NOBODY uses Frontpage to design production web sites. That word doc you sent me was pathetically short on detail. Colleges are notorious for being years behind the times.

I wish I could point you at a good program somewhere in W. Ma. I'd say look for an HTML course at UMASS. I can help you figure out whether the course is apropriate to your level of skill. Hell, I'll come with you when you talk to the woman at the community college.

PLEASE don't piss away your funds on Microsoft indoctrination like I did. The www does NOT run on Microsoft software. Your favorite sites do not run on Windows. You do not need Windows for anything, especially webmastering.

The Score is not a bad flick. I'd give it a seven in its genre, caper.

Which reminds me I need to fix my RoR movie app now.

Hi Matt,
Great to meet you this weekend. Yesterday's Hike was very pleasant and enjoyable. I''ve tried to sign up for a hike next weekend but it seems to be full. ( The franconia falling waters hike) Do you know of any other hikes for next Saturday? I'd like to hike with you again.
It's also a great idea to organise an Indian food meetup in Waltham. Can you suggest a restraunt?
My contact information is the following:

Nice to meet you, let's keep in touch:)
Aimee T,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bitch is showing up at hiking group events all too often. Pleasant -and- enjoyable? Stupid cow seems to think we all enjoyed stopping to wait for her to catch up to us every ten minutes. She's about 30 lbs overweight and doesn't seem to understand that flapping her lips constantly interferes with normal breathing. Shut up and hike, bitch! This is the same waste o'skin who when asked about the war in Iraq said of the Iraqis, "they started it."
